Makeup Collection & Organization

Any beauty lover would agree with me that there is nothing quite as satisfying as having a perfectly organized makeup storage, and as an avid follower of home decor boards on Pinterest and Youtube beauty gurus, having my very own (mirrored!) vanity table has been a personal goal ever since I moved to Paris. My bathroom & bedroom are very small, hence the only room where I could set up my vanity table was…the living room. This beauty spot couldn’t be more perfect as my living room has large ceiling-to-floor windows along the wall (unlike my tiny windowless bathroom) and the TV right beside it allows me to do my makeup while watching makeup tutorials. I cannot tell you how enjoyable it is to watch a Youtuber like the gorgeous Roxette Arisa on a huge, full HD, TV instead of a small laptop screen.

My vanity table is this sumptuous Aphrodite Venetian mirrored console from My Furniture (similar here and here), which I’ve paired with their big Stream mirror (similar here). I’ve spent a fair amount of time researching the best makeup storage options and a simple two-drawers console table was the perfect choice for me : the lack of storing space encourages me to fully use up the products that I already own rather than purchasing brand new products every month. And while acrylic organizers are extremely convenient, I personally don’t like having my makeup displayed on top of my vanity table : when you live in a small apartment like I do even a small amount of makeup can make the whole room look cluttered!

On top of my vanity table I keep a black & white storage box with all my base products and beauty blenders, and two mirrored jars with my makeup brushes. I typically switch up my foundation each day so this storage has been really handy, not to mention this allows me to save a lot of space in the drawers, and most importantly no one can tell there’s makeup in it.

Starting off with primers, I’ve been obsessed with the Becca Backlight Priming Filter and it’s dupe the Banila Co It Shiny Shimmer Base (also available here and here) ever since I discovered them a few months ago. With a creamy moisturizing texture, they both blend beautifully and help to give my complexion a truly gorgeous radiant and dewy glow.

Moving onto foundation and staying with Becca, I’m a huge fan of their Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation. With a beautiful silky formula and a luminous finish, this light to medium coverage foundation is absolutely perfect for everyday wear, particularly in Winter as it is incredibly hydrating and brightening. We all know that maintaining a radiant complexion in Winter is a challenge for us dry-skinned women, but with this foundation it is certainly and easily achievable. For days when I want a little more coverage and need to make sure my skin is 100% flawless, I reach out to the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Liquid Foundation. UD is a brand that I have grown to wholeheartedly adore over the past few years, and this foundation is truly a staple in my makeup collection during every season. Another foundation I love is the L’Oreal Lumi Magique. I’ve been wanting to try it for the longest time, but it isn’t available in France so I had to order it online. I absolutely adore the luminous and glowy finish of this foundation, it’s perfect for every day wear and it doesn’t break the bank.
If I need little to no coverage, I reach out to my beloved Hera CC Cream or to the Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done. People at Hera knew exactly what they were doing when they created their incredible CC Cream. While it doesn’t cover every imperfections with its sheer-to-medium coverage it does achieves the barely-there-look beautifully, even out skin tone, covers redness and gives the most radiant & semi-dewy finish to the complexion. With 50% of skincare ingredients (moisturizing, brightening, purifying and anti-aging) this CC Cream has raised the bar relatively high in terms of quality and results. It was the 2013 Editors’s pick for Allure Korea, and when you see the finish this CC gives it’s unsurprising why. With a thin but not runny consistency, it blends seamlessly in with the skin and quickly sets to a slightly powdery semi-dewy finish. It also blurs large pores, revealing only a baby-soft and even complexion. The UD on the other hand has little to no interesting skincare ingredient and provides very sheer coverage, which is perfect when I just need to stay home.

In the left drawer I have most of my eye makeup stored. To keep everything tidy and organized I picked up a simple InterDesign acrylic kitchen drawer organizer from Amazon, this way I can keep my makeup in organized sections. At the very right of the drawer I keep all of my eyeshadows palettes and false eyelashes, and on top of everything I keep a Hera clutch with my mascaras. I also have a very useful tool, the Sephora Color Switch. I won’t go too much into details but it basically allows you to switch your eyeshadow color on the brush, without having to switch brushes. Kelly from Takaraboxx published a small review about it on her Instagram.

I’m not really into single eyeshadows so I only have a few, like the Aritaum Shine Fix Eyes and the Maybelline Color Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow. I’m still on the market for a pink cream shadow so if you happen to know any let me know in the comments! The Maybelline isn’t bad but it contains carmine, and I’m not into crushed insects. Right next to them are stored my gel liners, like the 3CE Gel Liner, Makeup For Ever Aqua Black Cream Shadow (I use it as an eyeliner), Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner (also available here), and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade.

I only have a very few eyeshadow palettes that I truly adore, and I find that Too Faced, Makeup Revolution London and Urban Decay are winning at the eyeshadow game. As of late, I’ve been exclusively using the UD Naked 3 and the Too Faced Natural Eyes and Sweet Peach. Others palettes I love are the Makeup Revolution New-trals vs Neutrals Palette (also available here), the Laneige Urban Beige Pure Radiant Shadow (also available here) and the Heimish Lovesome Brink Dailism Eye Palette (also available here, here and here). Not only are these palettes perfectly pigmented, but they are also remarkably soft and buttery.

If there is one thing that I cannot leave the house without doing, it’s my eyeliner. I absolutely love deep black eyeliner, and over the years I’ve tried an array of liquid, cream and gel liners.
I have to start off by mentioning the incredible Clio Kill Black Waterproof Pen Liner (also available here and here) – coming from an eyeliner addict I can tell you it’s one of the best pen liner on the market. The tip of the applicator is very thin, literally glides on the skin and allows a precise application. The color is truly jet-black and it has a great staying power.
Others eyeliners I adore and are truly worth mentioning and looking into are the Hera Eye Designer Pencil (my favorite pencil liner hands down! also available here), Kate Supersharp Liner (also available here), Make Up For Ever Graphic Liner, 3CE Creamy Waterproof Eyeliner, L’Oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner (also available here) and of course the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil.
I also have three champagne/nude liners for my waterline and for the inner corner of my eyes, the Innisfree Gel Liner in shade #2 Champagne Pink (also available here), Zoeva Graphic Eyes in shade Myth and Nudestick Magnetic Eye Color in shade Angel.

I have very short and straight lashes, and so finding a mascara that actually works is a huge challenge. Anything that gives me big sultry lashes is a winner in my book! I have quite the array of mascaras in my possession as I am always on the hunt for the best mascara, and I keep all of them in a faux leather Hera makeup bag. I’ve already talked about the Hera Generlash Mascara multiple times, yet I can’t help but give it another mention.

It’s the kind of mascara where one coat already makes a huge difference and is perfect for both a beautiful day-time look and full-on evening look. It’s brush is perfect at separating even the tiniest lashes, while the waterproof formula does an incredible job at elongating them and giving them plenty of volume. The formula also contains nourishing, lengthening and strengthening ingredients. Another thing I love about it is that it doesn’t clump, flake or smudge at all even after several coats. Have I mentioned how it holds the curl all day long, even without an eyelash curler? The only downside of this mascara is the incredible waterproof formula that makes it extremely hard to remove without an excellent makeup remover. Whether you’re taking a dip in the pool or get caught in the rain, this mascara won’t budge at all.

Isehan Kiss Me Heroine Mascara Long And Curl (also available here and here) was a real surprise to me as I purchased it randomly without having much information about it. It doesn’t give you that false-lash effect nor plenty of volume as promised since it isn’t really buildable, but this mascara is definitely perfect for daytime/office-appropriate wear. I find it a little bit expensive for a drugstore mascara, but the formula truly lengthen, lift, slightly thicken your lashes and holds the curl all day long. The only thing I am not too thrilled about is the flaking, otherwise it is pretty much a mascara everyone should have in their makeup pouch!
The product has been recently reformulated, and while it’s not for everyone, most of us find it even more lengthening. This mascara scored a 4.3/5 on makeupalley and a 4/5 on amazon, that’s how amazing it is.

I find that L’Oreal mascaras deliver unmatched performance with insane pigmentation and lasting power, and with quality so outstanding I almost cannot understand the low retail price. At the moment I only have the Volume Million Lashes, the False Lash Superstar and the False Lash Sculpt but I hope to add more to my collection in the coming months. There’s nothing that makes me quite as excited as a high-end mascara, but these drugstore gems are definitely on another level.

In the right drawer I have all of my lipsticks, face palettes, highlighters, powders and blushes stored. I got two acrylic organizers from Amazon (byAlegory) to store big compacts & lipsticks, and they’re super handy. My love for Hourglass just got bigger, and although I am late to the party – not my fault, this brand isn’t available in France – I have definitely jumped on the Hourglass bandwagon. My boyfriend recently gifted me with the Incandescent Ambient Strobe Light Highlighting Powder and the Luminous Flush Ambient Lighting Blush. Needless to say, I am extremely grateful and wholly impressed with his taste! I honestly couldn’t be more pleased with these two products, and it’s just a matter of time before I extend my collection. This aesthetically pleasing gold case holds quite possibly the most beautiful pink-coral with warm undertone blush I have ever seen.

While on the topic of highlighting products, two other products I have and absolutely adore are the Urban Decay Aura Afterglow Highlighter, a finely milled icy pink highlighter, and the Makeup Revolution London Radiance Radiant Lights palette. It includes three silky powder highlighters with a nice staying power. The best part? This palette is extremely similar, almost a dupe, of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. For £8 this product is truly a steal for the quality you receive!

With a myriad of highly praised quality products that achieve what they promise and great formulation, Becca has been on my beauty radar for a long time. I have heard an abundance of great things about this brand, and now that I own a few of their products myself I just want everything. At the moment I only have the Rose Gold Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured Creme Highlighter, but I am itching to try more and more from this brand.

As you can tell I’m not really a blush person, but I still have a few others than the Hourglass, like the Nars Orgasm and Torrid, and my beloved Golden Sugar palette from Makeup Revolution.

Another makeup product I’m not really into is lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE lipsticks, but I have yet to find one that can actually stay on my lips for more than five minutes. I still have a few, like the YSL Rouge Volupté Shine in Pink In Confidence and Pink In Paris. I also have a Mac Pro Palette Large Duo with all of my depotted & melted Hera Rouge Holic and Laneige Serum Intense lipsticks.

Lastly, I use this versatile faux leather white Ottoman bench as a seat but also as a hair products/extra makeup storage. (similar)

What do you think of my setup?

I really reaaaally want to try the 3CE gel liner. I don’t own anything from them but I know I do love a good eyeliner! The Clio Kill looks like something I would try too.

May I know where your mirrored vase is from, please? It’s perfection!

    • Amy Hayden (author)

      Hello Kelly,

The vase is from a French store called “Maisons du monde”. 🙂

  • Charlotte

It looks so lovely and chic! I want to have the same dressing table at my own place, it’s amazing. My makeup space is truly a complete mess next to yours. I’m glad I found a blogger who doesn’t have too much makeup, it annoys me when youtubers or bloggers have way too much makeup and it goes to waste

  • Jessica

    • Amy Hayden (author)

I probably won’t do a closet tour as I am not interested in fashion, but I will surely publish a skincare cabinet tour! 🙂

Your makeup space looks so pretty and practical, that ottoman chair is perfect! I would definitely love to see more makeup posts, and as Louise^ said I would also love to see an in depth review of eyeliners.
